This year the Orchard Park Central School District supplied every K-2 student with their own individual music bag to use in their general music classes. The bags were distributed the week of October 19th. The elementary music teachers met virtually over the summer and suggested individual music bags as a possible solution to the problem of shared musical equipment. Each bag contains one scarf, jingle bells, a shaker egg, a pair of pool noodle pieces that are used as sand blocks, and a pair of rhythm sticks. These items are classroom instruments that the students would typically use in a school year but weren’t able to due to COVID. These items will be used in every music class for the primary level musicians. The bags went to every student in the district in kindergarten, first and second grading including remote kids. Almost 1,200 bags were distributed.
From 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, Joe Clem will present strategies to build confidence, resilience, and flexibility during challenging times in his virtual presentation Stronger on the Inside. The presentation will be available on the Orchard Park Central School District website www.opschools.org. Anxiety can be defined as the Perceived inability to manage a task in front of you. None of us has a playbook for these times, so stress is unavoidable. Honestly, we often rely on really old, mostly unconscious, information to manage stressors. The Emotional and Behavioral Sciences have provided us evidence-based tools to help us use these times to shift our perceptions so we can actually get better through our challenges. This workshop will introduce clear, evidence based, strategies to increase compliance and success and reduce defiance, anxiety and misery in your home for all ages. You will leave with techniques to implement! Joe Clem is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with over 15-yrs of practical experience. This combination provides a unique window into the emotions that drive negative cycles in our homes and clear behavioral strategies to help us move through them, back to a home we can love.

Orchard Park High School senior, Bryce McCandless was named a semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition. In September officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 66th National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the semifinalist are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. It was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 400 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
