Dear Parents of Incoming English 8 Honors Students:

While your children are beginning what is sure to be a wonderful summer vacation, we recognize that you also want to help prepare them for a successful start to the next academic year. Since reading is the foundation of all learning, we feel that it is essential for students to spend some time reading this summer. Students chosen for English 8 Honors are required to read TWO books this summer – one classic and one modern novel.  Please have your child choose one book from each list and use the following guidelines:

    1. Take serious, detailed notes while reading.  The notes taken should not in any way be derived from SparkNotes or the like.  One way to convey originality is to comment on and criticize the material encountered.  Students are encouraged to express opinions as well as likes and dislikes rather than simply summarizing.
    2. Make sure to keep copies of the books for use in September.  These books may be found at area bookstores and at amazon.com.

Classic List –English 8 Honors (PLEASE CHOOSE ONE):

Treasure Island – Robert Louis Stevenson

Call of the Wild – Jack London

    Fahrenheit 451 – Ray Bradbury

Modern List –English 8 Honors (PLEASE CHOOSE ONE):

Murder on the Orient Express – Agatha Christie

The Book Thief – Markus Zusak

No Promises in the Wind – Irene Hunt

If you have any questions, please feel free to email your child’s English teacher.  We hope you enjoy a safe, peaceful, and relaxing summer.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Holmes - Eclipse

    Mr. Raczkowski – Quantum
